DC educator shares message to families
May 9, 2023
Special Education Teacher and Special Olympics Head Coach Megan Callahan was featured on Fox5 DC as a part of 2023 Teacher Appreciation Week. In 2022, Garfield Elementary School was awarded ESPN’s “Top 5” National Banner School in the Nation for it’s school-wide inclusive culture and spirit.
“Last May, Garfield was honored as a Special Olympics Unified Champion Banner School and that was such a huge accomplishment because in 2020 we started our first Unified Bocce team, which is students with intellectual disabilities and students without intellectual disabilities together to participate in sport.
So we had this wonderful moment, we got silver and gold medals but more than that the students actually worked together. That spearheaded the inclusion movement at our school.” – Megan Callahan
