Participate in Events
SODC produces multiple events throughout the year from fundraising events, sporting championships and more, and each one has an organizing committee to make the event successful. Use your talents in a number of different roles: party planning, logistics, PR/marketing, website/social media, and more. If you have a few hours per week and are interested in working with a team, you’ll be able to make a big impact.

Participate in Events
Special Olympics DC hosts many events throughout the year:
- Games and Competitions
- Young Athletes Festivals
- Fundraising Events
Games & Competitions
Summer, Fall and Winter Games give athletes the opportunity to compete and showcase their skills and abilities in various sports. We invite everyone to come and cheer: spectators are called “Fans in the Stands” and get to see some great sports action.
The Young Athletes Program
Special Olympics Young Athletes is a sport and play program for children ages 2 to 7 years old with and without intellectual disabilities (ID). Young Athletes introduces basic sport skills like running, kicking and throwing, and provides activities that teach children important skills and healthy habits while they are young. This can set the stage for a life of physical activity and learning. Young Athletes Festivals feature multiple stations set up for each skill/sports activity–the groups of children do the activities and enjoy a great day of learning and playing together in an inclusive environment.
Fundraising Events
Our three major fundraising events are the fuel that power the program; they ensure athletes always participate at no cost. There are many opportunities to participate in these events or volunteer to help make them happen.
Law Enforcement Torch Run (September- October annually)
The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest public awareness vehicle and grassroots fundraiser for Special Olympics. This 5K run and walk is open to all law enforcement personnel and open to the public.
Night of Trees Gala (1st week of December annually)
Our Gala is a Washington holiday tradition that features dining, dancing, and bidding on exciting items in our live and silent auctions.
Polar Plunge (Mid-February annually)
Get freezin’ for a reason! At the Polar Plunge athletes, co-workers, friends and families raise funds and plunge into an above ground pool to the cheers of the crowd!
